House Speaker Mike Johnson thinks that if federal workers join a planned walkout to protest President Biden’s handling of Israel’s war against Hamas, they should be fired. He said this on Sunday, talking about a news article that said workers from 22 agencies are planning to protest Biden’s policy on Gaza by joining the walkout on Tuesday.
Johnson posted on X, “Any government worker who walks off the job to protest U.S. support for our ally Israel is ignoring their responsibility and abusing the trust of taxpayers. They deserve to be fired.” He also said that he will work with fellow Republican, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, to make sure that each federal agency starts the right disciplinary process against anyone who walks out on their job.
A group of federal workers called Feds United for Peace is planning to hold a “Day of Mourning” on the 100th day of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
The organizers of the protest told AL-Monitor that they believe many other workers will join them after staffers from 22 federal agencies pledged to walk out. These workers include employees from various agencies like the Department of Defense, State, Homeland Security, and Veterans Affairs, among others.
Johnson’s statement comes at a time when President Biden is facing pressure over his support for Israel from both inside and outside the federal government. Biden recently told hecklers at a campaign event that he’s pushing Israel to “significantly get out of Gaza.”
The planned protest also follows Israeli officials reducing troop levels in Gaza and anti-Israel demonstrators targeting the White House, shouting slogans against Biden. Non-essential staffers were evacuated from the area as a precaution as the rally became more intense.
