Macy’s announced on Tuesday that it will close 150 of its stores over the next few years. These stores are not doing well, so Macy’s will shut them down. This will leave Macy’s with only 350 stores by 2026. Around 2,350 workers will lose their jobs because of this, both in the stores and in the company offices.
The specific stores that will close have not been revealed yet. However, some locations that are already known to be closing include Bayfair Center in San Leandro, California; Simi Valley Town Center in Simi Valley, California; Governor’s Square in Tallahassee, Florida; Kukui Grove Center in Lihue, Hawaii; and Ballston Quarter in Arlington, Virginia.
On Tuesday, another fifty stores that are not doing well will be told that they will also be closing.
Macy’s has many stores in New York state, including Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse.
Macy’s says this move is part of a big change for the company as they try to improve. The retail industry has been facing tough competition from discount stores and online shopping, like Amazon. Macy’s has already closed nearly 300 stores since 2015. They had 723 stores in October, including 158 Bluemercury stores and 56 Bloomingdale’s stores.
They plan to focus more on Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury in the future because these stores have been doing better than Macy’s. They want to open smaller versions of Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury over the next few years.
