Columbia University decided to cancel its big graduation ceremony because of ongoing protests supporting Palestine. But they’re still having smaller ceremonies for each school this week and next.
The university said, “Our students told us they want to focus on their own school’s ceremonies, where they can be recognized with their classmates. So, we won’t have the big ceremony on May 15.”
The protests are because of the conflict that started on October 7th when Hamas fighters attacked southern Israel. This conflict led to a lot of deaths and hostages. Israel then launched a big attack on Gaza to fight against Hamas. Many Palestinians, mostly women and children, were killed, and many had to leave their homes.
Before this, the University of Southern California also canceled its main graduation ceremony but still has other events planned.
