Boxing World Mourns Loss of Featherweight Champion Andrew Tham and Rising Star Sherif Lawal

The boxing world mourns the loss of featherweight champion Andrew Tham, who tragically passed away at the age of 28 following a motorcycle crash in Cumbernauld, Scotland.

Tham, known for his prowess in the ring and his vibrant personality outside of it, had been riding his Kawasaki motorcycle when he collided with a Hyundai Tucson on May 30.

Despite being rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, he succumbed to his injuries on June 2.

Featherweight champion Andrew Tham dies at 28 following a motorcycle crash; boxing community mourns.

The St. Andrew’s Sporting Club, which managed Tham’s boxing career, paid tribute to him on X, highlighting his championship spirit and the impact he had on those around him.

George Stewart, who had recently fought against Tham, expressed his devastation at the news, praising Tham as a true warrior.

Tham embarked on his professional boxing journey in 2019 and clinched the featherweight championship title in September 2023, during an undercard match between Ricky Burns and Willie Limond.

Tham’s passing comes as another blow to the boxing community, following the recent death of British boxer Sherif Lawal, 29, who died on May 12 after sustaining a head injury during his professional debut.

Lawal’s fight at the Harrow Leisure Centre in London ended tragically when he suffered a blow to the temple, leading to the cancellation of subsequent matches.

These losses serve as stark reminders of the risks inherent in combat sports and the importance of prioritizing safety measures to protect athletes.

The boxing world honors the legacies of Andrew Tham and Sherif Lawal, remembering them for their contributions to the sport and the indelible mark they left on those who knew them.
