The trial of Gavin Plumb, the security guard accused of plotting to kidnap, rape, and murder TV presenter Holly Willoughby, revealed a shocking online search history that caught the attention of the court. Prosecutors presented evidence of Plumb’s disturbing conversations with another individual, referred to as Marc, on WhatsApp, which showed his obsession with Willoughby and his desire to commit heinous crimes against her. The evidence included a message from Plumb, dated December 2021, where he said he had wanted to rape Willoughby for about three years, but people had always backed out.
Plumb’s online searches and messages revealed his sinister intentions, including queries such as “how to meet people who plan to kidnap celebrities” and “what does it feel like to be raped”. He also searched for information on Jewish women being raped during World War II. The court heard that Plumb had discussed the murder of BBC presenter Jill Dando, who was shot dead on her doorstep in 1999, with Marc.
Further evidence presented in court included a document of communications between Plumb and Marc, which described how they would plan and execute the kidnapping, rape, and murder of Willoughby. In one message, Plumb said he had booked 10 days off work to “get longer to stake her out”, indicating his intent to track Willoughby’s movements and plan a home invasion. The document also included a voice note from Plumb, in which he mentioned tying up Willoughby’s family members and taking her away.
The court heard that Plumb and Marc had engaged in sexualized discussions about Willoughby, with Plumb stating that he had been looking forward to the planned attack. In one instance, Plumb wrote that he was “at the point where I don’t care about the risks or consequences”, indicating his willingness to take extreme measures to fulfill his twisted fantasies.
Prosecutor Alison Morgan KC described Plumb as someone with an “obsession” with Willoughby and an “ultimate fantasy” to rape and kill her. The trial continues, with Plumb denying charges of soliciting murder, incitement to rape, and incitement to kidnap.
Throughout the trial, the prosecution has presented a disturbing picture of Plumb’s mental state and his fixation on Willoughby. The evidence presented in court has shown a clear pattern of intent and planning, highlighting the gravity of Plumb’s crimes. The case has sent shockwaves through the media and the public, raising concerns about the darker corners of the internet and the importance of online safety.
