On Thursday night, an Air India flight traveling from New Delhi to San Francisco was redirected to Krasnoyarsk International Airport (UNKL) in Russia due to a technical issue. The decision for the precautionary landing was prompted when the cockpit crew identified a potential problem in the aircraft’s cargo hold. Upon landing, all 225 passengers and the 19 crew members safely exited the plane and were transported to the terminal for further handling.

Following the diversion, Air India immediately began coordinating with governmental and regulatory authorities to manage the situation. The airline is working diligently to arrange alternate travel plans for the passengers to ensure they can continue their journey to San Francisco. In a statement, Air India assured that the safety and well-being of their customers and crew is their highest priority.

Due to the absence of Air India staff at Krasnoyarsk International Airport, the airline is organizing third-party support to assist the passengers. This support includes providing necessary services and accommodations while Air India works on arranging a ferry flight to transport the passengers to their intended destination as quickly as possible.

This incident follows a recent trend of flight diversions involving international airlines. Earlier this month, a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Goa was redirected to Bengaluru because of poor visibility at the Manohar International Airport. Similarly, in June 2024, an Akasa Air flight bound for Mumbai from Delhi was diverted to Ahmedabad following a security alert.

These events highlight the challenges and complexities of international air travel, where technical issues, weather conditions, and security concerns can necessitate unexpected changes in flight plans.
