Sunil Chhetri’s remarks on India’s medal count have resurfaced amid the Paris Olympics 2024. Chhetri, the former India football captain, discussed this issue on a podcast called “Figuring Out” with YouTube influencer Raj Shamani. Originally released three weeks ago, the podcast has gained attention again due to an Instagram Reel shared by Shamani, highlighting Chhetri’s comments.
In the podcast clip, Chhetri underscores the abundance of talent in India, mentioning a hypothetical five-year-old in the Andaman Islands with potential in sports like football, javelin throw, or cricket. He stresses that the primary issue is not a lack of talent but rather the failure to identify and nurture it. According to Chhetri, many talented individuals end up in unrelated jobs, such as call center work, due to this oversight.
Chhetri argues that it is incorrect to claim that India doesn’t win enough medals despite its large population. He emphasizes that the problem lies in the lack of proper talent identification and nurturing at the right time.
Comparing India to other countries like China, the US, Germany, Japan, Australia, and Canada, Chhetri notes that these nations excel in identifying and nurturing talent, which is why they consistently perform well in the Olympics.
As of the current Paris Olympics 2024, India has won three bronze medals and is ranked 41st. In contrast, China leads with 10 gold medals and a total of 20 medals, while France is in second place with 8 golds and a total tally of 26 medals. Japan ranks third with 8 golds, 3 silvers, and 4 bronze medals.
Highlighting individual achievements, Manu Bhaker made history by becoming the first athlete from independent India to win two medals in a single Olympic event. She and Sarabjot Singh also became the first Indian shooting pair to win an Olympic medal in shooting at Paris 2024. Additionally, Swapnil Kusale won a bronze medal in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event, contributing to India’s medal tally.
