Rupp Arena transformed into a nostalgic time machine on Friday night as Kentucky basketball legends returned to the court they once dominated. The alumni team, La Familia, showcased their enduring skills and competitive spirit, demonstrating that their talent remains intact.
Highlights included Aaron Harrison’s deep three-pointers, Andrew Harrison’s offensive contributions, Willie Cauley-Stein’s impactful defense, and Eric Bledsoe’s aggressive driving and playmaking. The energy was palpable as former Wildcats turned back the clock, showing their prowess in front of a cheering crowd.
La Familia’s performance was dominant as they defeated the 305 Ballers with a score of 82-56 in their round of 64 matchup in The Basketball Tournament. The team, led by head coach Tyler Ulis, quickly took control of the game.
Despite a brief tie early on, La Familia maintained a commanding lead throughout, extending their advantage significantly after the Elam Ending rule came into play. Their performance was a testament to their cohesive play and the enduring legacy of Kentucky basketball.
Tyler Ulis, the head coach and former Wildcats star, expressed his joy at reuniting with former teammates. He highlighted the rarity and significance of such reunions, noting that it was his first win as a coach and expressing gratitude for the support of his players. Ulis emphasized the importance of coming together after years apart and the pleasure of seeing old friends on the court once again.
Ironically, Kerem Kanter, who was not a Kentucky alumnus but had strong familial ties to the program, had the standout performance of the game. Kanter, who played at Green Bay and Xavier, delivered a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
His performance was crucial, as he exploited mismatches and contributed significantly from both the field and the free-throw line. Ulis recognized Kanter’s talent and his ability to make an impact despite not being a former Wildcat.
La Familia’s victory secured their place in the round of 32, where they will face The Nawf, a team from the greater Atlanta area. The game will be held at Rupp Arena, promising another high-energy atmosphere. Reflecting on their time together, Ulis and the Harrison twins acknowledged the strong bonds formed despite the intense competition during their college years.
Now, with the benefit of hindsight and maturity, they are savoring the opportunity to reconnect and enjoy the game together, aiming to continue their successful run in the tournament.
