A tragic incident occurred in Kramatorsk, Ukraine, where Ryan Evans, a British safety adviser, was killed when a Russian missile struck the Hotel Sapphire. Evans, 38, was part of a Reuters team staying at the hotel in the eastern Donetsk region. The missile attack, which happened on a Saturday night, resulted in significant casualties and damage.
In addition to Evans’ death, two other Reuters journalists sustained injuries and were hospitalized. The missile was identified as an Iskander-M Russian ballistic missile, which caused blast injuries, concussions, and cuts to the reporters. The severity of the attack left the hotel in ruins, with Associated Press reporters noting that the site resembled “rubble” and required excavators for debris removal.
Local authorities reported that the missile strike also destroyed a nearby multistory building. Donetsk regional Governor Vadym Filashkin confirmed the extensive damage in the area. This escalation in violence reflects the ongoing conflict and its impact on both military and civilian targets.
Further violence was reported in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, where Russian shelling led to multiple injuries. In Chuhuiv, five people, including a 4-year-old and a 14-year-old, were hurt when two houses were hit. Additionally, a two-story house in Kharkiv city was set ablaze, injuring eight individuals.
The conflict’s effects were also felt in Russia, where Ukrainian shelling resulted in five deaths in the Belgorod region. Regional Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reported twelve other injuries in Rakitone, including a critically injured 16-year-old girl. Another man died in a separate drone attack on the village of Solovevka. This escalation of violence highlights the broader regional impact of the ongoing conflict.
