The maritime dispute between China and the Philippines has intensified with a recent clash at the Sabina Shoal in the South China Sea. Both nations have long claimed various islands and zones within the sea, leading to an ongoing series of confrontations.
The situation escalated dramatically when vessels from both countries collided near the Sabina Shoal, each side accusing the other of deliberate aggression. This shoal, known as Xianbin Jiao in China and Escoda Shoal in the Philippines, is situated close to the Philippines’ coast but far from China, highlighting the geographical complexity of the dispute.
The collision on August 19 involved multiple vessels from both countries, with each accusing the other of instigating the crash. This incident was followed by another collision two days later, further escalating tensions. International actors, including the UK, Japan, Australia, South Korea, and the EU, have criticized China’s actions in the region.
The Philippines also reported that a large number of Chinese ships blocked their attempts to resupply a coast guard ship stationed at the shoal, suggesting that China might be trying to reclaim land in the area. Evidence of crushed coral mounds filmed by the Philippine Coast Guard has led to allegations that China is using the material to expand the shoal, though China has dismissed these accusations.

The Philippines has been maintaining a prolonged presence at the Sabina Shoal, viewing it as crucial for their plans to explore the Spratly Islands for oil and gas. China, however, sees the stationing of the Philippine ship Teresa Magbuana as an attempt to occupy the shoal.
Historical parallels are drawn to the Second Thomas Shoal, where a grounded World War Two-era Philippine ship has been a longstanding point of contention. China views the recent actions at Sabina Shoal as a repetition of past tactics by the Philippines to establish control over disputed areas.
The maritime conflict has seen a series of dangerous encounters, with both sides engaging in aggressive tactics. China has used water cannons, lasers, and other means to harass Philippine vessels, while there have been reports of Chinese personnel boarding Philippine ships, leading to physical confrontations.
The Philippine defense chief, Gilberto Teodoro, has highlighted the power imbalance between the two nations and called for international support against China’s actions. Although there have been no fatalities, the ongoing skirmishes have resulted in injuries, and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has warned that any Filipino deaths would be considered an “act of war,” raising concerns about a potential larger conflict in the region.
Despite the rising tensions, there have been recent attempts to de-escalate the situation. Both countries agreed to allow the Philippines to resupply its outpost at the Second Thomas Shoal, an operation that proceeded without incident.
However, the clashes at Sabina Shoal cast doubt on the effectiveness of these agreements, as the conflict can easily shift to other disputed areas. The recurring confrontations underscore the fragility of any temporary peace in the South China Sea, where multiple nations have vested interests and unresolved territorial claims.
