Tensions between Iran and Israel reached a new peak following an Iranian missile barrage on Israel, which consisted of approximately 180 missiles. Israel’s missile defense system reportedly intercepted most of the attack, which was viewed as retaliation by Iran for the deaths of key figures, including Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, and Iranian commander Brig-Gen Abbas Nilforoushan.

The attack also came in response to Israel’s military actions in Lebanon, where it launched a ground assault against Hezbollah’s operations along the border, citing the need to dismantle Iran-backed “terrorist infrastructure” in the area.

In light of the escalating situation, U.S. President Joe Biden made it clear that he does not support any Israeli military action targeting Iran’s nuclear sites. This statement came after a reporter asked him whether he would support such an attack.

Biden firmly rejected the idea, answering, “The answer is no.” He further emphasized that the U.S. would engage in ongoing discussions with Israel to determine an appropriate response to Iran’s missile strike. Despite his opposition to strikes on nuclear sites, Biden affirmed that Israel has the right to defend itself.

The U.S. stance was echoed by the State Department, which condemned the Iranian missile strike as an “unprecedented escalation.” At the same time, it reiterated Israel’s right to respond.

However, the White House did not offer explicit guidance on what that response should entail. Biden’s remarks highlighted the delicate balancing act the U.S. is trying to maintain—supporting Israel’s right to defend itself while calling for a proportional response to avoid further escalation.

Biden also emphasized the U.S.-Israel cooperation that helped mitigate the effects of the missile attack. He praised the joint efforts between U.S. and Israeli military forces, which contributed to the successful interception of the incoming missiles.

In a video message, Biden detailed the U.S. military’s role in assisting Israel’s defense, calling the Iranian missile assault “defeated and ineffective.” This collaboration underscored the strong military ties between the two nations, even as they navigate the complexities of the broader regional conflict.

Despite the ongoing military tensions, Biden reaffirmed America’s unwavering support for Israel. He made it clear that, although the U.S. was deeply involved in seeking a de-escalation of the broader Middle Eastern conflict—particularly in efforts to negotiate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas—the primary focus was on ensuring Israel’s security.

This approach reflects the broader international call for restraint and proportionality in responding to the Iranian attack while emphasizing the right of nations to defend their sovereignty and security.
