Israeli forces have intensified their military operations in northern Gaza, specifically targeting the Kamal Adwan Hospital, according to health authorities in the region. After days of besieging the facility, Israeli troops entered the hospital compound and opened fire, causing significant alarm among medical staff and patients.
The hospital, already strained by a shortage of medical supplies and a surge of injured individuals from surrounding conflict zones, is struggling to maintain operations under these dire circumstances.
The Kamal Adwan Hospital, one of the few minimally operational medical facilities in northern Gaza, has been overwhelmed with casualties from ongoing military activities. Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the hospital director, reported that all departments are currently under direct attack.
He emphasized the desperate need for humanitarian aid, stating that instead of receiving necessary support, the hospital is facing military incursions and shelling, severely compromising the safety of patients and staff.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed grave concern about the situation, noting that communication with personnel at Kamal Adwan has been cut off since the latest military actions began. Before losing contact, WHO managed to evacuate some patients to a different facility.
However, the continued violence has made it increasingly difficult for humanitarian organizations to provide assistance and assess the needs of those sheltering within the hospital.
In response to the situation, the Israeli military claimed that its operations were driven by intelligence reports indicating the presence of terrorists within the hospital premises. They stated that they had facilitated some patient evacuations and supplied the hospital with essential resources, including medical equipment and fuel.
Nonetheless, health officials from Gaza have highlighted the inadequacy of these measures, as the hospital remains overwhelmed with approximately 200 patients and many more seeking refuge.
The Gaza health ministry reported further deterioration of conditions at Kamal Adwan Hospital, with damage to infrastructure, including the oxygen station. Dr. Abu Safiya expressed his distress over the military’s actions, describing a chaotic environment where patients and staff were forced into stairwells for safety.
Despite the arrival of a recent supply convoy, the hospital remains in urgent need of food, water, and adequate medical assistance, as ongoing military operations prevent necessary aid from reaching those in need across northern Gaza.
