Presidential Medal of Freedom: Honoring Influential Figures Across Society

Biden celebrates 19 honorees' exemplary contributions to diverse societal domains.

On Saturday, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, philanthropist George Soros, and actor-director Denzel Washington will be among the 19 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

The ceremony, hosted at the White House, underscores President Joe Biden’s commitment to recognizing individuals who have significantly impacted the nation and the world.

The honorees have made “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors,” according to the White House.

Four awards will be given posthumously, honoring Fannie Lou Hamer, Robert F. Kennedy, George W. Romney, and Ash Carter, who each left lasting legacies in civil rights, justice, and governance.

Philanthropy is also a central theme this year. Chef José Andrés, whose World Central Kitchen delivers meals in crisis zones, and Bono, the U2 frontman and social justice advocate, stand out among the awardees. These figures exemplify how compassion and leadership can address global challenges.

In the realm of sports and entertainment, soccer legend Lionel Messi, NBA icon Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and actor Michael J. Fox are being celebrated.

Recipients include leaders in politics, entertainment, civil rights, and LGBTQ+ advocacy.

Fox, known for his Parkinson’s advocacy, has inspired millions through his work and resilience. Science education advocate Bill Nye joins this group, recognized for making scientific knowledge accessible and engaging.

Further highlighting diversity, conservationist Jane Goodall, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, and fashion designer Ralph Lauren will also receive the honor.

LGBTQ+ activist Tim Gill and American Film Institute founder George Stevens Jr. represent the arts and human rights sectors. David Rubenstein, co-founder of The Carlyle Group, completes the list, recognized for his contributions to business and philanthropy.

This year’s recipients reflect a wide spectrum of achievements, emphasizing the varied paths to making a meaningful impact.

As President Biden bestows these medals, the nation acknowledges the extraordinary efforts that advance societal progress and uphold the values of democracy and equality.
