King Charles is deeply aware of his global responsibilities and unique diplomatic influence, and he is committed to using his role effectively, a royal source stated following his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday.
The meeting at Sandringham, the King’s Norfolk estate, came just a day after Charles hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The King received praise for his demonstration of solidarity with Zelenskyy, particularly after the Ukrainian leader’s tense meeting with Donald Trump and his vice-president, JD Vance, at the White House on Friday.
Diplomatic efforts concerning Ukraine have intensified, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer urging European leaders to recognize the pivotal moment in history and join his “coalition of the willing.”
Meanwhile, Trump has pushed back against European calls for the U.S. to provide security assurances as part of any Ukraine peace deal.
King Charles’ Role in Global Diplomacy
A royal source described the past week as “six days of royal diplomacy at its most delicate, deliberate, and nuanced.”
“His Majesty is very conscious of his responsibility globally, regionally, and nationally – and passionately engaged in all the detail,” the source stated.
The source further emphasized the King’s position as a significant global statesman, noting:
“As a global statesman and a head of state for both the UK and Canada, the King’s role is highly significant, and His Majesty is determined to play his part, within appropriate parameters.
“His role by necessity and constitutional obligation is to offer symbolic gestures, rather than express comment.”

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau With King Charles III
While King Charles must maintain political neutrality, he retains the constitutional right to advise and warn ministers, including prime ministers, when necessary.
His audiences with Zelenskyy and Trudeau were described as “routine but highly significant, given the global context.”
Discussions on Canada, the U.S., and Ukraine
Although Buckingham Palace does not disclose details of private discussions, it is understood that Trudeau’s concerns over Canada’s strained relationship with the U.S. under Trump’s leadership were a key topic, as well as continued support for Ukraine.
Trump has made repeated inflammatory remarks about Canada, at one point suggesting it could become the 51st U.S. state and arguing that without substantial U.S. subsidies, it “ceases to exist as a viable country.”
Trudeau, who traveled to London after attending an emergency defense summit of European leaders over the weekend, had previously stated his intention to raise these concerns with the King, given Charles’ role as King of Canada.
Additionally, Trump has announced plans to impose tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico starting Tuesday, citing concerns over border security.
The King’s Evolving Role
King Charles, who has extended an unprecedented second state visit invitation to Trump, is increasingly seen as a unifying figure amid political upheaval. His role in soft-power diplomacy through the royal family has become more pronounced.
The royal source noted that the meetings required “high-level engagement and high-level sensitivity,” underscoring the careful diplomatic balancing act the King continues to navigate.
