A violent incident occurred in Amman’s Rabiah neighborhood, known for its frequent demonstrations against Israel and the location of the Israeli embassy. Police and ambulances were seen rushing to the area after gunshots were reported, prompting authorities to cordon off the vicinity around the heavily policed embassy, eyewitnesses confirmed.
State news agency Petra reported that police shot and killed the gunman after he had opened fire on a police patrol in Rabiah. The rapid police response neutralized the attacker, preventing further escalation in this sensitive area.
Jordanian Communications Minister Mohamed Momani labeled the incident a terrorist attack targeting public security forces. He further stated that the authorities had launched an investigation into the attack and revealed that the gunman had a prior criminal history involving drug trafficking.
According to a security source, the attacker, armed with an automatic weapon, led police on a pursuit lasting over an hour. He was ultimately cornered and killed just before dawn, bringing an end to the tense confrontation.
