Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was discharged from the hospital on Sunday after undergoing surgery to address a brain hemorrhage. The 79-year-old leader reassured the public by appearing alongside his doctors in a press conference, demonstrating that he was recovering well.

Lula expressed confidence in his health, stating that despite his age, he felt as energetic as someone much younger, with “the energy of 30 and the enthusiasm of 20” to continue his work as president.

According to Lula’s medical team, the surgery was successful, and he was expected to rest at home in São Paulo until Thursday. While he was able to walk and hold meetings, international travel was deemed unadvisable for now. However, if his recovery progresses well, Lula might be able to travel to Brasília, the country’s capital, following a medical exam.

In addition to his health update, Lula addressed the recent arrest of General Walter Braga Netto, a former ally of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, in connection with an alleged coup plot.

Lula had previously refrained from commenting on the case, but on Sunday he condemned any efforts to undermine Brazil’s democracy, emphasizing that it was unacceptable for high-ranking military officials to be involved in a conspiracy to overthrow the government.

The investigation into the coup plot involves efforts by Bolsonaro supporters to keep him in power after his 2022 election defeat. General Braga Netto, along with Bolsonaro and other individuals, was indicted in November for attempting to alter the election outcome.

Although formal charges have not been filed against Braga Netto, he was arrested on charges related to obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence.

Lula’s remarks reflect the ongoing political tensions in Brazil, as the country grapples with the aftermath of the 2022 election and the alleged plot against the current government. The investigation into the coup plot and the arrest of key figures have brought these tensions to the forefront, further complicating the political environment as Brazil seeks to stabilize its democratic institutions.
