Republican Gov. Jeff Landry of Louisiana announced on Friday that the “Make America Great Again” flag will be flown at the state governor’s mansion to honor the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
“Today, under President Trump, begins a renaissance in this Nation,” Landry said in a statement. “One where America and her people will always come first. In Louisiana, we think that is worthy of celebrating!”
Landry, a strong Trump supporter, invited other Louisianans to raise their MAGA flags in celebration on Inauguration Day. He had previously ordered flags on state buildings to be flown at half-staff in remembrance of the 14 victims of a terror attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day.
Trump’s inauguration coincided with the day Landry had initially designated for British national Edward Pettifer, the stepson of Prince William’s former nanny, to be honored. A spokesperson for Landry told The Associated Press that state flags would now be lowered to half-staff on January 24 in tribute to Pettifer.
Earlier this week, House Speaker Mike Johnson directed that flags at the U.S. Capitol be raised to full height on Inauguration Day, temporarily halting a 30-day period of flag lowering to honor the late former President Jimmy Carter. The flags will be lowered again the following day.
Other governors, including North Dakota’s Kelly Armstrong, Florida’s Ron DeSantis, Alabama’s Kay Ivey, Tennessee’s Bill Lee, Iowa’s Kim Reynolds, California’s Gavin Newsom, and Texas’ Greg Abbott, have all declared that U.S. flags in their states will be raised to full height in honor of Trump’s inauguration.
President Joe Biden’s flag-lowering order, which was issued on December 29, applies to federal buildings, U.S. embassies, and other facilities worldwide. This order is set to remain in effect until January 28, during Trump’s first week in office.
Trump had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the flag-lowering order. On January 3, he took to social media to comment on the situation, writing, “Democrats are all ‘giddy’” about the idea of flags being lowered on Inauguration Day.
“Nobody wants to see this,” Trump wrote. “No American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it plays out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
In the meantime, Trump has already begun flying U.S. flags at full height at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.
