At the inaugural Lagos State Energy Summit, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu demonstrated his commitment to sustainable energy solutions by inspecting one of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered vehicles on display. The vehicle, which was converted by the Lagos State Government-owned IBILE Oil and Gas Corporation (IOGC), highlights the state’s push for cleaner transportation options.

The Lagos State Energy Summit is an essential event where policymakers and energy experts gather to discuss the state’s energy vision, focusing on achieving a sustainable energy future by 2030.

Governor Sanwo-Olu Champions CNG Vehicles, Aligning Lagos with National Clean Energy Goals

The inspection of the CNG-powered vehicle underscores Lagos State Government’s growing dedication to sustainability. Governor Sanwo-Olu’s engagement with the CNG-powered vehicle illustrates the state’s openness to adopting transport solutions that can help reduce emissions and lower transportation costs for residents. The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) reports that over 30,000 vehicles in Nigeria have now been converted to run on CNG, marking significant progress in the country’s clean energy transition. The CNG conversion program, which started with just seven centers, has grown exponentially. By 2024, Nigeria will have established over 200 conversion centers under the Conversion Incentive Programme, which was launched in August 2024 to support the expansion of CNG use across the country.

CNG Adoption Accelerates as Mainstream Energy Source, Supporting Nigeria’s Clean Energy Transition

The PCNGi has emphasized that CNG is no longer just an alternative energy source but is rapidly becoming the mainstream choice for cleaner, greener, and more affordable transportation. Governor Sanwo-Olu’s involvement in the summit and his support for CNG-powered vehicles reflect the increasing recognition of this shift. As CNG adoption grows, it is expected to significantly contribute to reducing carbon emissions and offer a more cost-effective solution for Nigerians, aligning with both local and national goals for energy reform.

The Lagos State Government’s actions in promoting CNG-powered vehicles are in line with Nigeria’s broader energy reform goals. The PCNGi has expressed appreciation for Governor Sanwo-Olu’s proactive role, noting that state-level leadership is crucial for achieving the country’s national energy goals. By supporting the transition to cleaner energy, Lagos is setting an example for other states, contributing to the national effort to achieve a sustainable, low-emission future for Nigeria.
