Austin also vowed to counter Chinese claims in the region, including those in the South China Sea, and to deter North Korea’s missile threat and China’s claims on Taiwan. Noting that the US does not seek conflict or confrontation, Austin warned that it would not flinch in the face of bullying or coercion, underscoring the US commitment to defending its allies and partners.

Austin’s remarks were met with a stern response from Chinese Lieutenant General Jing Jianfeng, who accused the US of making false accusations against China and of deceiving and exploiting Asia-Pacific nations to advance its own interests. Jing reiterated China’s commitment to the region’s development and prosperity, claiming that Washington is holding on to outdated alliances and seeking to divide the world into ideologically-driven camps.
In contrast, Austin emphasized the US commitment to dialogue and cooperation, stating that there is no room for competition or conflict. He urged China to engage in substantive dialogue and to respect the sovereignty of all nations in the region. Austin’s message was a clear call to action, urging China to respect international law and to work collaboratively with the US and its allies to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
