Mysterious Goldfish’s Journey Goes Viral Online

Dr. Ben Beska, a 33-year-old junior doctor from Newcastle, recently experienced an unusual encounter when he found a goldfish lying on his garden grass with no idea how it got there. The unexpected event has gone viral on social media, gaining over 16 million views on X, formerly Twitter.

The story began when Dr. Beska noticed a group of magpies squawking in his garden on Saturday. He decided to investigate and was surprised to find the goldfish lying in the grass. Initially, he thought it was “seconds from death” and took immediate action to save the fish. Dr. Beska retrieved the fish and placed it in a freezer drawer filled with water, which he had available at the time.

The doctor suspected that a bird might have picked up the fish from a nearby pond and dropped it while carrying it away, but there are no ponds close by. Instead, Dr. Beska believed the fish must have traveled a “reasonable distance” to end up in his garden.

Dr. Beska’s quick thinking and actions ensured the fish’s survival, and he soon purchased a tank and chemicals to care for it. He named the fish Alice after a text message he sent to a friend, which autocorrected from “it’s alive” to “it’s Alice.” Alice is now thriving in her new tank, and Dr. Beska plans to purchase a larger tank and possibly another fish to keep her company.

The viral post of the goldfish lying in the grass has earned over 150,000 likes and more than 4,000 comments, with many users sharing funny and speculative theories about the fish’s origin. Dr. Beska’s fiancé even spotted a separate account created for the fish, @alicebeska, which includes humorous posts about the fish’s wild journey. One post reads, “Such a wild day, booked one of those @journeetrips and wound up in some northerner’s lawn? I would like a refund please.”
