Heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has drawn a parallel between the support he receives from his team in boxing and the aid the UK has provided to Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia. Speaking from the Ukrainian embassy in London, Usyk highlighted the crucial role of his support team in his boxing success and similarly praised the UK’s assistance in bolstering Ukraine’s defense against Vladimir Putin’s forces.

Usyk acknowledged that while he is the sole fighter in the ring, his achievements are a result of collective effort. He emphasized that, just as his team contributes to his victories, the UK has been instrumental in supporting Ukraine’s efforts. This comparison underscores the significance of teamwork and solidarity in overcoming challenges, whether in sports or in the ongoing war.

The Ukrainian boxer was in London to oversee the departure of a convoy of over 50 vehicles destined for Ukraine. These vehicles, originally set to be scrapped under London’s ULEZ scheme, were repurposed for use in Ukraine thanks to an initiative from Kyiv’s mayor, Vitality Klitschko.

Usyk’s involvement in this mission reflects his commitment to supporting Ukraine, showing how international cooperation can provide critical resources in times of need.

During the event, Usyk, alongside the new Ukrainian Ambassador to the UK Valery Zaluzhny, honored the volunteers preparing for the journey. The convoy included various vehicles such as NHS ambulances and a London red bus, all filled with aid supplies. Zaluzhny’s speech highlighted the unity and solidarity between the UK and Ukraine, underscoring how such efforts are pivotal in the ongoing struggle.

Mike Bowden of the Swindon Humanitarian Aid Partnership (SHAP) also spoke at the event, receiving support from Usyk and Zaluzhny. The Ukrainian flag held up by the dignitaries bore the message “Peaceful Heavens for Kharkiv,” emphasizing the importance of solidarity for cities under attack. The grassroots support from the UK is portrayed as a vital contribution to Ukraine’s fight.

Usyk expressed profound respect for those involved in the humanitarian effort, acknowledging the personal sacrifices of volunteers like Kelly, who has made numerous trips to Ukraine, and Piotr Slawomir Maslag, who is driving a repurposed London bus.

His own experience in the Kyiv Territorial Defence Forces further highlights the gravity of the situation, where the stakes are far higher than in sports. This reflection underscores the critical importance of international support in Ukraine’s ongoing conflict.
