Israeli President Isaac Herzog defended the recent escalation of violence against Hezbollah, attributing it to the group’s frequent rocket attacks from Lebanon. He stated that Hezbollah’s strikes have caused immense destruction in northern Israel, displacing 100,000 residents.
Herzog emphasized that such relentless aggression would be intolerable for any nation, including the U.S., and underscored that Israel was forced to respond to protect its citizens.
The conflict intensified on Friday when Israel launched a strike in Beirut, killing senior Hezbollah commanders. In response, Hezbollah’s deputy chief, Naim Qassem, vowed that the group was prepared for a full military confrontation.
Additionally, a previous attack in Lebanon, linked to Israel, killed 37 Hezbollah militants and injured over 2,700. Although Israel has not confirmed involvement, reports suggest the attack was executed through advanced technological methods.

Despite the increasing violence, Herzog rejected claims that Israel was seeking a broader war. He reaffirmed Israel’s preference for a diplomatic resolution but criticized Hezbollah and Hamas leaders for avoiding negotiations. Herzog framed the conflict as a fight against jihadism and maintained that while Israel does not desire war, it will defend itself if necessary.
International officials, including the UN special coordinator for Lebanon, have expressed alarm over the growing tensions, warning that the region is on the brink of disaster. Calls for diplomatic engagement were echoed by the Iranian ambassador to Lebanon, who was wounded in Israeli airstrikes and voiced his solidarity with the Lebanese people. His injury, he said, was a symbol of support for Lebanon in its fight.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah launched some of its most far-reaching rocket attacks, targeting Haifa and the Jezreel Valley. Israel responded with extensive airstrikes, hitting nearly 300 Hezbollah positions.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Hezbollah of further retaliation, while Israel also clamped down on media outlets, including Al Jazeera, in the West Bank, citing national security concerns. The conflict shows no signs of abating as both sides prepare for further confrontation.
