A recent airstrike in central Beirut, which has been attributed to Israeli forces, resulted in the deaths of 22 people and injuries to 117 others. This incident marks the deadliest attack in Lebanon’s capital since the renewed fighting between Hezbollah and Israel began a year ago.

The strike occurred in the densely populated Basta neighborhood, where an apartment complex was completely destroyed, and numerous cars were damaged. First responders worked tirelessly to rescue survivors and recover the deceased from the rubble, with many residents having recently taken in individuals displaced by Israeli bombings in southern Lebanon. This influx of displaced persons increased the overall number of casualties.

The airstrike targeted two buildings, aiming specifically at Wafiq Safa, a senior Hezbollah figure responsible for liaison with Lebanese security. Although Safa survived the attack, the civilian toll was significant. An analysis by the Guardian revealed remnants of a U.S.-manufactured Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) at the scene, which converts conventional bombs into GPS-guided munitions.

This particular strike is notable as it is the first confirmed use of a U.S.-made munition in central Beirut since 2006. JDAMs are known for their precision but have faced criticism for being deployed in densely populated areas, posing a significant risk to civilian lives.

Human Rights Watch confirmed the weapon type, indicating that its use in civilian areas violates principles of international law. The analysis of the munition fragment revealed its specifications, affirming it belonged to the U.S.-made Mk80 series of bombs.

This revelation has intensified scrutiny of U.S. military aid to Israel, especially given that more than $17 billion was allocated last year. Rights organizations have urged President Biden to reconsider arms transfers to Israel, pointing to the deadly consequences of U.S. munitions in recent conflicts.

The attack has left residents in shock, particularly those who lost family members or homes. Many survivors from the destroyed apartment complex expressed disbelief that such violence could occur in what they considered a safe haven.

For example, a man mourning his uncle, who had sought refuge in Beirut, lamented the impact of the strike not just on his family but on the community as a whole. This tragedy has further compounded the emotional and physical toll on a neighborhood already grappling with the repercussions of ongoing violence.

Since the onset of renewed hostilities in October 2023, more than 2,100 individuals have lost their lives in Lebanon, with the majority of casualties occurring since Israel escalated its military actions on September 23.

The ongoing conflict, characterized by rocket exchanges between Hezbollah and Israel, has created a climate of fear and uncertainty among residents, particularly in historically significant areas like Basta, which was once a vibrant marketplace known for its rich culture and traditional architecture.
