The University of Texas is Offering Course on Taylor Swift Songs

The University of Texas is delivering a class on the songs of Taylor Swift. The class, which is labeled “Taylor Swift and the Politics of Pop,” will be taught by music critic Jesse J. LeDoux. Class lessons will focus on topics such as Swift’s invasion into feminist advocacy, her relation to political activists, and her lyrics about social topics. Taylor Swift is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She has won five Grammy Awards, one American Music Award, and two Academy Awards.

Born in Pennsylvania, Swift moved to Nashville at the age of 14 to pursue a career in country music. She approved with the independent label Big Machine Records in 2006 and broadcasted her first album the subsequent year. It was certified multi-platinum and produced the number-one singles “Tim McGraw” and “My Life Would Suck Without You”. In 2007, she signed a record deal with Sony Music Entertainment and released her second album, Fearless. The album became the best-selling debut album by a female artist of all time within six months of its release, and it produced the number-one single “You Belong With Me”.

Swift became an international sensation with her fourth album, 2009’s Speak Now. The album sold over 5 million copies in its first week of release and topped the charts in more than 25 countries. Its lead single, “Mine”, was also successful worldwide; it became her second number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and won several awards, including Best Female Video at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. The follow-up singles “Mean” and “All I Wanna Do” were also hits worldwide. In 2012, she released her fifth studio album, Red: The Album.
