Reubens had tried out for “Saturday Night Live”‘s 1980–1981 season, but Gilbert Gottfried—who shared a personal friendship with one of the show’s producers and had a similar acting style—was cast instead.

Reuben launched his program in Los Angeles based on the Pee-Wee Herman persona after taking out a loan and feeling bitter about the rejection. Other Groundlings, including John Paragon, Phil Hartman, and Lynne Marie Stewart, stood by him.

Five months of “The Pee-Wee Herman Show” at The Roxy Theatre were sold out; he gave adult shows at midnight and kid shows during matinees. HBO aired “The Pee-Wee Herman Show” as part of their “On Location” series in 1981, assisting him in making his program popular.

As Pee-Wee’s popularity increased, Reubens started portraying the character at all public events and interviews, billing himself as Pee-Wee rather than by his real name to “get the public to think that he was a real person.”

More performances like Pee-Wee on programs like “Late Night with David Letterman” in the middle of the 1980s and touring with “The Pee-Wee Herman Show,” and performing across the nation helped him get recognition and success.
