Republic day is celebrated on 26th January every here in India. On this auspicious occassion it is observed as a holiday across the country. Republic day bring patriotic  feelings amongst every Indian living in India or other countries. To think of patriotic films and the thing that comes to our minds, is Hindi cinema. Bollywood has a large collection of patriotic films whether they are thriller based or biography of someone or war based. All these films have touching moments which inspires young generations of India to save their country and to be ready to do anything for her. It reminds us of all the events that took place in the past because of which we are here today.

Here’s a list of movie you can watch on this Republic Day and chill your dayout :

1.The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002):

Cast: Ajay Devgan and Amrita Rao

It is a Bollywood Hindi-language film that is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. The story of the film is about Bhagat Singh, who is a socialist revolutionary during the time of independence. He fought for Indian independence with other members of the Hindustan Republic Association.

The film starts with Bhagat’s life from his childhood where he shows the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the film ends with the story of the day he was hanged—23 March 1931.

2.Lagaan (2001):

Cast: Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh

It is a Bollywood musical sports film. It is both written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. The whole movie was shot in villages near Bhuj. The film takes the audience to the early 1890s, during the period of late Victoria of India in colonial British Raj.

The story of the film revolves around a small village in Central India. The people are burdened by high taxes, and also an extraordinary situation when an arrogant British army officer challenges them to play a game of cricket against them. The story moves around the whole situation as the villagers face difficulty in learning a game that is new to them. The result of the game will change their village’s destiny.

3.Rang De Basanti (2006):

Cast: Aamir Khan, Siddharth, and Soha Ali Khan

It is a drama film that is written, produced, and directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra.

The film shows a British student traveling to India to make a documentary film on the freedom fighters in India. She became friends with five young men in the film. They have inspired them to fight against corruption.

4.Madras Cafe (2013):

Cast: John Abraham and Nargis Fakhri.

It is a 2013  political action film that is directed by Shoojit Sircar. The story of the film is set in the late 1980s and early 1990s, during the time of Indian intervention in the Sri Lankan civil war. It was also the time of the assassination of former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

The film is about an Army special officer appointed by the intelligence agency to head a covert operations in Jaffna. It is a place where the Indian peace-keeping force was forced to withdraw.

5.Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran (2018):

Cast:  John Abraham, and Diana Penty

It is a 2018 historical action film that is directed by Abhishek Sharma. It was produced by Zee Studios. The story is based on the test explosions of nuclear bomb that were conducted by the Indian Army at Pokhran in 1998.

6.Gandhi (1982):

Cast:  Ben Kingsley

It is a 1982 biographical film based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi. He is the leader of the nonviolent Indian independence movement that was fought against the British Raj during the 20th century.  It was directed and produced by Richard Attenborough from a screenplay that was written by John Briley.

The film shows the life of Gandhi from a defining moment in 1893. It shows how he was thrown off a South African train for being in a whites-only compartment. The movie ends with his assassination and funeral in 1948. Although he was a Hindu, Gandhi’s embraced all the other faiths.

7.The Ghazi Attack (2017):

Cast: Rana Daggubati, and Taapsee Pannu

Ghazi is a war film that is both written and directed by Sankalp Reddy. The film is in Telugu and Hindi. The film is about the mysterious story of the sinking of PNS Ghazi during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The film shows the story of an executive naval officer of the Indian Submarine who along with his team remained underwater for 18 days. It explores the circumstances under which PNS Ghazi sank off the coast of Visakhapatnam.

8.Raazi (2018):

Cast: Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal

Raazi is a spy thriller film that is directed by Meghna Gulzar. The film is based on the story of Harinder Sikka’s 2008 novel named Calling Sehmat. The story is based on a real-life incident of an Indian Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) agent. She is married into a family of military officials in Pakistan on her father’s request. Her job was to relay information to India, prior to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.  

9.URI- The Surgical Strike (2019):

Cast:  Vicky Kaushal, Paresh Rawal, Yami Gautam, and Mohit Raina 

Uri is a film related to the Surgical Strike. It is both directed and written by Aditya Dhar. The plot of the film is a dramatized account of the retaliation to the attacks on Uri base in 2016. The film shows the story of a Major in the Indian Army named Vihaan Singh Shergill who plays a leading role in the events that took place. He was the leader of the four teams that went to answer back the terrorists who killed other fellow soldiers.

10.Kesari(2019) :

Cast:  Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra

Kesari is an action-war film that is both written and directed by Anurag Singh. It was produced by Karan Johar, along with Hiroo Yash Johar, under the Dharma Productions, Cape of Good Films, and Zee Studios.  The film follows the story of the events that took place leading to the Battle of Saragarhi. It was a battle fought between 21 soldiers of the 36th Sikhs of the British Indian Army and 10,000 Afridi and Orakzai Pashtun tribesmen in 1897.

11.Article 15(2019):

Cast: Ayushmann Khurrana

Article 15 is a crime drama that is written, produced, and directed by Anubhav Sinha. It was produced by Zee Studios. The story follows a police investigation that started after the three teenage girls go missing from a small village one after another. The film mainly deals with Article 15 of the Constitution of India. This article prohibits discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex, or place of birth. It is inspired by many true-life events, which include the Badaun gang-rape allegations that took place in 2014 and also the 2016 Una flogging incident.


Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, and Gayatri Joshi

Swades is a drama film that is written, produced, and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. The story is based on the true-life story of a Non-resident Indian (NRI) who returned to his homeland. The story of this film was considered ahead of its time. It received universal critical acclaim and is now considered a cult classic of Hindi cinema. Shah Rukh Khan plays the lead role in Swades.

13.Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019):

Cast: Kangana Ranaut 

It is a drama film that is based on the life of Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi. It was directed by Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi along with Kangana Ranaut. The film was produced by Zee Studios and Kamal Jain. The film shows the life history of the Rani of Jhansi and all the hardships that were faced by her during her era.

14.Gunjan Saxena(2020):

Cast: Janhvi Kapoor and Pankaj Tripathi

The film is about Flight Lieutenant Gunjan Saxena who is an Indian Air Force (IAF) officer and also a former helicopter pilot. She joined the IAF and was there in Kargil War veteran. She was the only woman that was a part of the Kargil War. This makes her the first woman IAF officer to go to war.  She was ordered to evacuate the wounded from Kargil, and to transport supplies, and assist in surveillance which was her main role during the Kargil War.


Cast:  Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, and Preity Zinta

Lakshya is a  war-drama film that is directed by famous actor Farhan Akhtar. The story is about a Lieutenant (later acting as Captain) Karan Shergill. He develops a major change from an aimless young man into an army officer. It is a story based on coming ages which is set against the backdrop of the Kargil War that took place in 1999.

16.Mangal Pandey: The Rising(2005):

Cast: Aamir Khan

It is a historical film which is also a biography. It is directed by Ketan Mehta. The film is based on the life of Mangal Pandey, who is an Indian soldier. He is known for helping soldiers to spark the Indian rebellion of 1857. This was also known as The First War of Indian Independence. The story shows his struggles and also how he was punished by the Britishers.


Cast:  Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif 

Phantom is an action film that is directed by Kabir Khan. The film is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Siddharth Roy Kapur. The film is based on the revenge taken by the Indian government after the attacks of 26/11 that took place in Mumbai. The film shows how they target all the masterminds behind the attack and kill them one by one.

18.Chak De! India(2007):

Cast: Shahrukh Khan 
It is a sports film that is directed by Shimit Amin and also produced by Aditya Chopra. It tells a story about the Indian women’s national hockey team. They were inspired by the team’s win at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. The film shows the story of Kabir Khan, who is the former captain of the Indian men’s national field-hockey team. He and his mother were driven out of the family home by their angry neighbors after a loss to Pakistan. Later after several years, Khan becomes the coach of the women’s hockey team. He became the coach with the sole aim to turn its sixteen players into a brand new championship unit. 

19.Dangal (2016):

Cast: Aamir Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Sanya Malhotra

Dangal is a  biographical sports film that is directed by Nitesh Tiwari. The film was produced by Aamir Khan.  The story of the film is based on the Phogat family of Harayana. The story shows Mahavir Singh Phogat who is a pehlwani wrestler. He also trains his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari in wrestling to become India’s first world-class female wrestlers. The film will show how they struggle and what are the mindsets of the people when it comes to a female wrestler.


Cast: Akshay Kumar and Nimrat Kaur
Airlift is a historical film that is directed by Raja Krishna Menon. The film follows the story of Ranjit Katyal, who is a Kuwait-based businessman. He carries out the evacuation of all the Indians based in Kuwait during the time of  Invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. The story of the film is taken from the real-life story of a Kuwait based Malayali businessman Mathunny Mathews. The invasion took place in 1990. Ranjit Katyal, along with his other friends and also with the help of the Indian government leads the evacuation of 170,000 Indians who were settled in Kuwait.

21.Mission Mangal(2019):

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha, and Taapsee Pannu
It is a drama film that is directed by Jagan Shakti. It was jointly produced by Cape of Good Films, Hope Productions, and Fox Star Studios. The film is based on the life of scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation who all contributed a lot in the work to the Mars Orbiter Mission, which was India’s first interplanetary expedition.


Cast: Akshay Kumar, and Ileana D’Cruz
Rustom is a crime thriller film that is written by Vipul K Rawal. It is directed by Tinu Suresh Desai. The story of the film is based on the K. M. Nanavati v. State of Maharashtra court case. It tells the story of a Naval Officer whose wife had an extramarital affair with a businessman in his absence and he finds out the truth.


Cast: Akshay Kumar, Taapsee Pannu, and Rana Daggubati.
Baby is an action film that is both written and directed by Neeraj Pandey. The plot follows the last mission about a temporary task force that is headed by Feroz Ali Khan. This force was formed in response to the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Their job was to find and kill those terrorists who were planning any sort of attacks in India. In the concluding part Ajay, Jai, and Shukla meet their deep asset Ashfaq in Saudi, Al-Dera. It is a place where Bilal used to discuss the funding and execution of their plans. After killing Bilal they found that Maulana was there at the suite. Jai knocks him out and decides to bring him back to India, pretending that he is Ashfaq’s uncle who needs to visit India for an urgent liver transplant. Maulana and Bilal were terrorists and had an international bounty on their heads. Maulana is finally brought to India. This was kept a secret. The trial run was successful.



Cast: Arvind Swami and Madhoo 

Roja is an Indian romantic thriller that is both written and directed by Mani Ratnam. The film was in Tamil-language. The film follows Roja who is a simple girl. She belongs from a village in Tamil Nadu, and she is making desperate efforts to find her husband, named Rishikumar. She is finding him after he was kidnapped by militants during a secret undercover mission in Jammu and Kashmir. The story is based on the love between Savitri and Satyavan who belong to the Hindu epic, Mahabharata.


Cast:  Arvind Swami and Manisha Koirala 

Bombay is an Indian romantic drama film that is written and directed by Mani Ratnam. The film is in Tamil-language. The film revolves around an inter-religious family that lives in Bombay before and during the Bombay riots. The riots took place between December 1992 and January 1993 after the demolition of the Babri Masjid. This demolition led to religious tensions between Hindus and Muslims. The film depicts human relationships against Indian politics.

26.Chittagong (2012):

Cast:  Manoj Bajpayee

Chittagong is a historical war film that is directed by Bedabrata Pain. The film is based upon events during the time of British India’s Chittagong Uprising.  The film shows the difference between the people and also how they were determined to have a free India.

27.LOC Kargil (2003):

Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, and Sunil Shetty

LOC Kargil is a historical war film that is based on the Kargil War that was fought between India and Pakistan. It is both produced and directed by J. P. Dutta under J.P. Films Banner.

The film is based on the war fought in 1999 between India and Pakistan around the Line of Control. It is still remembered by every Indian till date. India won the war.


Cast:  Sunny Deol, Sunil Shetty, and Jackie Shroff

Border is a war film that is both directed and produced by J. P. Dutta. The film shows the time of the Indo-Pakistani War that took place in 1971. It is based on the real-life events that happened during the time of the Battle of Longewala in 1971. The film shows the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for their country but didn’t allow its enemies to lay a foot on India.


Cast: Paresh Rawal and Annu Kapoor 

Sardar is a biographical film based on the life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was one of India’s greatest freedom fighters. The film is directed by Ketan Mehta.  The film starts with the young life of Sardar Patel who is playing cards with his friends. After his childhood, the film then moves to the age of the Quit India Movement and the fight for India’s freedom. Sardar realized that not having a solution to the problem might result in a civil war in the country. The film portrays his differences with Nehru in the fight for independence. The film mainly shows the struggle of the freedom fighter.

Shaheed is a patriotic film that is directed by S. Ram Sharma It was produced by Kewal Kashyap. The film is based on the life history of Bhagat Singh. It also shows the struggles and his achievements in the period of gaining independence from the Britishers. He sacrificed his life for his motherland.

31.Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero(2004):

Cast: Sachin Khedekar, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Rajit Kapur

It is a biographical war film, that is both written and directed by Shyam Benegal. The film shows the life of the Indian independence leader Subhas Chandra Bose who was in Nazi Germany: 1941–1943, and also in Japanese-occupied Asia 1943–1945, and the story shows the events leading to the formation of Azad Hind Fauj.

32.Kranti (1981)

Cast: Dilip Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, and Hema Malini.

Kranti is a historical film, that was both produced and directed by Manoj Kumar. The film marked the comeback of Dilip Kumar after a five-years. This film also celebrated the golden jubilee in many centers across India. The film shows a story of the fight for independence from the Britishers between 1825 and 1875. The film shows how men lead the war against British Rule in India.

The film shows a man named Sanga who is an honest and dedicated employee in the kingdom of Ramgarh. He is charged with killing Laxman Singh and was sentenced to death. But he manages to escapes and forms a group of his own. The only goal was to drive the British out of India. This group was also known as Kranti.

33.Paltan (2018):

Cast: Jackie Shroff, Arjun Rampal, and Sonu Sood

It is an action-war film that is written, directed, and produced by J. P. Dutta. The film is mainly based on the 1967 Nathu La and Cho La clashes that took place along the Sikkim border after the 1962 Sino-Indian War. The film shows the scenes of the clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in the regions of Nathu La and Cho La in 1967. The place where the Indian troops defeated Chinese troops and stopped them from capturing the land of Indian territory.

34.1971 Beyond Borders (2017):

Cast: Arunoday Singh and Allu Sirish

It is a war film that is both written and directed by Major Ravi. The film is originally in Malayalam-language. The film revolves around two different time periods that are based on the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 and both the stories run parallel to each other.

35.Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013):

Cast: Farhan Akhtar and Sonam Kapoor

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is a biographical sports film that is directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. The film is basically based on the life of Milkha Singh, who is an Indian athlete and also a Commonwealth Champion. He was also a 2 400m Asian champion and an Olympian. The film is a biography of Milkha Singh and his film as an athlete. The film starts during the partition the time when he lost his parents during the riots.

36.Khamosh Paani (2003):

Cast: Kiron Kher, Aamir Ali Malik, Arshad Mehmood, and Salman Shahid

Khamosh Pani is an  Indo-Pakistani film. The film is about a widowed mother and her young son. They are living in a village located in Punjab. The village undergoes changes during the late 1970s. The film shows how the mother manages to save her son and to earn their living during the hard times when there was a war going on.

37.Purab Aur Paschim (1970):

Cast: Manoj Kumar, Saira Banu, Ashok Kumar, and Prem Chopra

It is a drama film. The movie was both produced and directed by Manoj Kumar. The film is about British India, where Harnam betrays a freedom fighter and was rewarded. But the freedom fighter was killed after the act of betrayal, leaving his wife and family devastated.

38.Bharati (2000):

Cast: Sayaji Shinde and Devayani 

It is a biographical film. It is originally in Tamil-language.  It was directed by Gnana Rajasekaran. It is a film based on the life of Subramania Bharati who is a Tamil poet. It shows all the details about the famous poet.

39.Jhansi Ki Rani(1953):

Cast: Mehtab and Sohrab Modi 

It is a historical film that is both produced and directed by Sohrab Modi. The film is set in the 19th century during the time of the Mutiny of 1857. It is about the bravery shown by the queen Lakshmibai, also known as  Rani of Jhansi. She was the one who took up arms and was ready to fight against the Britishers. She led her army against the British army. She was one of the first Indian females at that time to do so. It was the most expensive Hindi film of that era.

Haqeeqat is an action film that is directed by Kuku Kohli. It was produced by N.R. Pachisia. The film is based on the story of a  platoon fighting the Sino-Indian war of 1962 who is assumed to be dead in the hilly terrains of Ladakh. Later he was rescued by tribals living nearby.

Raajneeti is a political thriller film that is co-written, directed, and produced by Prakash Jha. It was produced by Prakash Jha Productions and UTV Motion Pictures. The film was shot in Bhopal. The story is based on a family who is involved in politics.

42.Mother India(1957):

Cast: Nargis, and Sunil Dutt

Mother India is an epic drama film that is directed by Mehboob Khan. It is the story of a poverty-stricken woman named Radha who lives in the village. During the absence of her husband, she struggles to raise her sons. She survives against many troubles that come on her way. The film promotes women’s empowerment in the country.

It is a Tamil action film that is both written and directed by Shankar. The film is produced by A. M. Rathnam. 44.Gadar: Ek Prem Katha(2001):

Gadar is an action film. The film shows scenes of the Partition of India that took place in 1947. The story is based on the life of Boota Singh who is a truck driver and rescues a Pakistani girl during the time of Partition. They were later attracted to each other and were married. The film shows how the family of the Pakistani girl reacts to the situation after knowing the truth.

45. Ek Tha Tiger(2012):

Cast: Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif

It is an action thriller that is directed and co-written by Kabir Khan. The film was produced by Aditya Chopra. The film shows Tiger who is an Indian spy is tasked to recover information from a Professor before it is gained by Pakistan. But there is a twist in the story. He started falling in love with Zoya who is a girl with a dark secret. This is a story based on an Indian spy falling in love with an ISI agent.

46.Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty(2014):

Cast:  Akshay Kumar, Sumeet Raghavan, and Sonakshi Sinha.

Holiday is an action thriller film that is both written and directed by A. R. Murugadoss. It is a remake of the Tamil film named Thuppakki. The film is based on the story of an Indian Army officer who arrives in Mumbai on a vacation. He along with his batchmates hunts down the terrorist leader of a sleeper cell network in order to deactivate all the operating under his command. This act stopped terrorist activities in India for a long time.

47.Tango Charlie(2005):

Tango Charlie is a war film that is both written and directed by Mani Shankar. The film follows the story of a paramilitary man named Tarun Chauhan’s journey. From the beginning when he was a border guard recruit to a war-hardened fighter. The film portrays the bravery of our Indians soldiers. The film deals with an insurgency in many parts of India.

49. Mission Kashmir(2000):

It is an action thriller film that is both directed and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The film shows the life and tragedy of a young boy named Altaaf Khan. His entire family was accidentally killed by the police officers due to some misunderstanding. He is then adopted by the police chief who was responsible for his loss. Later when Altaaf finds out the truth he seeks revenge and eventually becomes a terrorist.

50. Tiger Zinda hai(2017):

Cast: Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif.

It is an action thriller that is directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. It is a sequel to Ek Tha Tiger, which was released in 2012.  The film shows how Tiger and Zoya are forced to reveal themselves after being in hiding for a long time. They are ordered to save a group of hostages who are the nurses working in Ira. They are held hostages by a militant terrorist organization in Iraq headed by Abu Usman.
