The cast of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” surprised everyone by showing up at the 2024 Emmy Awards. They were there to present the award for Outstanding Talk Series.
But there was a twist. This was the first time they had been invited to the Emmys in the show’s 16-year history, even though it first aired back in 2005.
During the ceremony, Kaitlin Olson, alongside her co-stars Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Danny DeVito, and Rob McElhenney, expressed their surprise. Olson mentioned how honored they were to be there, but Howerton quickly realized something wasn’t right. He pointed out that the show had been on for 75 years according to Olson’s statement.
Confusion ensued as they realized they had never been invited before, despite the show’s long run. McElhenney noted that they must have been missing out on all the award ceremonies where people dress up and give each other awards.
The cast then turned to DeVito, asking if he had ever been nominated. DeVito confirmed he had won an Emmy but for a different show, “Taxi,” not “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” This revelation disappointed the cast even more.
DeVito revealed that “Taxi” had only been on for five years compared to their show’s 16-year run, yet it had received 34 nominations and 18 wins. This stark comparison left the cast feeling disheartened.
Their frustration resonated with fans on social media, with many expressing support for the cast and criticizing the lack of recognition for their long-standing comedic success.
While the cast was excited to attend the Emmys for the first time, their joy was overshadowed by the realization of the lack of recognition for their show’s achievements over the years.
